Sanitation and Decontamination
Wild animals seek refuge in buildings because of easy access to food and shelter. But unfortunately, wild critters make a whole lot of mess wherever they reside. Wildlife removal is the process of getting rid of the nuisance critter – preferably in the most humane way possible.
But after that is completed, you still need to deal with the massive mess left behind. The types of mess to expect depends on several factors – some of which include:
- The type of animal species
- Their number
- How long they’ve been residing.
And depending on these factors, some of the most common messes to expect include:
- Torn off materials
Animals like raccoons, rats, and squirrels will tear off the insulation. They will also chew on almost anything they can lay their teeth on – including wood, pipes, wires, air ducts, etc. The shred materials litter the infected space.
- Bringing in rubbish
When animals like raccoons and rodents want to build their nests, they also bring in many foreign materials. Examples include leaves, twigs, and debris. But that’s not all. They also bring in food from the outside world. Unfortunately, these materials decompose, attracting roaches and other insects. It also serves as a breeding ground for diseases.
- Droppings and urine
From bats to skunks to squirrels, all wildlife leave some excretion. Wildlife droppings and urine are breeding grounds for diseases. Examples of these include rabies, leptospirosis, histoplasmosis, and so on.
What’s more, the urine and droppings of wild critters also give off an offensive smell that reduces the overall air quality of your home.
Enter Sanitation and Decontamination
Sanitation and decontamination is the process of eliminating all traces that indicate that a wild animal was once living in your building.

Our Sanitation and Decontamination Process
Before sanitation and decontamination of your Los Angeles or Orange County California home, we first remove the nuisance wildlife. Only then can clean up commence. And here’s the process we make use of:
- Identify infected areas
The first step is to locate areas that experienced high wildlife activity. This may be the attic, chimney, or even under the basement. Signs of high wildlife activity include a nest, accumulation of droppings, stains from urine and droppings, concentration of repulsive smell, physical sightings, etc.
- Remove solid waste
It would be best if you never came in contact with animal waste because of the health risks it poses. That’s why you need to put on protective clothing and a hand glove. Pick up the solid droppings, nesting materials and other solid waste and put it in a plastic bag. You may need to scrape them off with a shovel.
- Vacuum smaller wastes
A high-powered vacuum is then used to suction smaller droppings and wastes from the infected area.
- Apply Disinfectant
As noted earlier, animal wastes pose several health risks to humans and pets. That’s why applying a disinfectant is non-negotiable. At A Team Services, we make use of an enzyme-based cleaner because of its ability to kill stubborn microscopic pathogens.
- Use a deodorizer
Asides from the awful smell of animal wastes, animals also release pheromones that may attract other wildlife. While the disinfection stage will eliminate most of these scents, a deodorizer will help conceal them completely. What’s more, it will help improve the air of your home.
